When The SHTF, They’ll Be Able To See You

May 12, 2012 by

Well we all knew it was coming.  We’ve been slowly losing our liberties over the past several years.  From the pat downs by the TSA to the government listening in our phone conversations.  It now looks like another step has been taken that will come in handy for the government when the SHTF.

A newly discovered Air Force intelligence brief states that should fleets of unmanned drones accidentally capture surveillance footage of Americans, the data can be stored and analyzed by the Pentagon for up to 90 days.

The instruction, dated April 23, admits that the Air Force cannot legally conduct “nonconsensual surveillance” on Americans, but also states that should the drones ”incidentally” capture data while conducting other missions, military intelligence has the right to study it to determine whether the subjects are legitimate targets of domestic surveillance.

Note the use of the word “incidentally” in the brief.  This is the loophole that will allow them to potentially spy on Americans.  This is usually how liberties are lost – via loopholes in procedures that can be exploited.  The government says phone tapping is allowed because they need to be able to hear if terrorists are planning an attack.  However, by them saying they were concerned about a potential domestic terrorist, they could literally listen in on any conversation.

Besides the obvious concerns with this invasion of privacy, you have to wonder where it will end.  We now have GPS devices tracking our every move in our smartphones.  Online retailers and credit card companies track our browsing and purchases.  Verizon FIOS now has a neat new feature where you can monitor and control certain areas of your home from your smartphone.  You can remotely adjust your thermostat, lock and unlock your doors and even monitor your home through cameras in the house.SHTF - Will They See In?

While these new features are impressive and fun, you can see down the road the government telling the cable companies that they need to monitor a “potential terrorist” and have access to their indoor cameras (of course under the protection of the Patriot Act).  At that point the government can see inside and outside your home, what you buy and have and everything else about your life.  Kinda scary.

It makes you think of movies like Minority Report where people were arrested for crimes they were likely to commit in the future.  Is the question, will this happen OR how far are we away from this?  Unfortunately, I think it’s the latter.
