SHTF Sunday Summary

After a week hiatus, the Sunday SHTF Survival Summary is back.  Apologies for the delay on the posting but had a few technical difficulties lumped with a family vacation.  However, we’re back and ready to cover the last two weeks of news/events/opinions.  Without further ado…

1. As many of you know, I am passionate about building a community when the SHTF.  That is why I love reading about how bartering will be a key skill once the collapse happens.  The ReadyNutrition site posts a great article about bartering and the community.  An excellent point made in this article is how bartering will not only help exchange supplies but help build a true community.

2. Each week we hear how the market is going to collapse from the various alternative news sites.  When you start to hear from mainstream news sites, you start to get worried.  Mac at SHTFPlan outlines how the market insiders are starting to take notice.  This further cements the inevitable fact that it is coming – just a matter of when.

3. I always marvel at the waste in our government and Congress is usually at the top of the list.  The Economic Collapse Blog provides 16 Sickening Facts That Show How Members Of Congress And Federal Workers Are Living The High Life At Your Expense.  My personal favorite is #2 where in 2006, 12% of federal workers made $100,000 or more per year.  Now that number is 22%.  And you would be shocked at the titles making these salaries.

4. Late this week, we saw our first signs of the coming Quantative Easing 3 (QE3).  Ben Bernanke stated that previous QEs have helped the market sparking speculation that another is on the way.  What does this mean to preppers?  Well, if you saw the spike in gold and silver, it gives you an idea.  QE3 equals the Fed starting up the US dollar printing presses again.  This will result in a further weakening of the US dollar which usually corresponds to a rise in gold and silver prices.  So, if you are able to get your hands on gold or silver, now is the time.

5. One big question many preppers have is am I in the right location for when the SHTF?  Your bug out (or bug in) location is key to your survival.  But which states are best positioned for riding out the collapse?  Mike at the Economic Collapse Blog takes on that question and covers each of the 50 states.  Unfortunately for Survivor Mike, New Jersey is ranked as a D-.  Need to start thinking about a move.

6. In terms of planning for your future, you hear everything about contributing to your 401k or other defined benefit plan.  However, as preppers, is that really a wise choice considering what we are preparing for?  The folks at ReThinkSurvival weigh the pros and cons of putting your money in preps vs. a 401k.  This is something I’ve been researching for some time as I’m undecided about saving for a rainy day vs. investing in more aggressive vehicles.  Robert Kiyosaki’s book “Rich Dad’s Increase Your Financial IQ” covers this and other topics very well.  Highly recommended.
